Season III

House of the Dragon; OK, Season 1 was, in my opinion brilliant and highly watchable. Season 2 not so good. Treading water at times, decent action but only later on in the episodes, twists up to a point but looking back it was more of a placeholder than anything else. So now Season 3 became available to view on Monday, so we were up for it. It's been on about a two year break. Time and memory fade away.

The first episode lasted an hour and ten minutes, was said to be full of "action" but is it any good? The unreliable Guardian gave it four stars. Their reviewers are never the best. Don't get me started. I hoped I could give it four stars also but ... well there was a lot going on, maybe too much; sea battles, land battles, dragon battles, people shouting orders on wild battlefields and yet being heard (?), characters staring into space and looking grim, lots of deaths.

All the fantasy drama padding boxes were ticked right there but any serious dialogue was brief, muddled and often unclear, the big effects were convincing but by now quite familiar so less of a Wow Factor. The characters maybe not so well enough drawn this time either. My final feelings - maybe needs more plot clarity, too many big curve ball events, tighter and better writing and less but more focused and meaningful action scenes.

I'll be back for more next Monday, I'm still hoping for the best. A mixture of hype, silence and the long gap between seasons means that, as I'm not a really fully energised up to date fan, I can't quite recall where everyone is or the details of plot that you need to hold onto for things to click. I need to do some homework but that's not going to happen. Watching TV is hard work. Maybe too hard. Perhaps we'll click eventually.
